BC Singing Scalllop Fishery

British Columbia's Singing Scallop Fishery is a quota Fishery with ten scallop bed area's we are allowed to fish in.

Each area has a biomass survey before fishing can begin. Once a survey is complete %4 of an area's biomass is availble to be caught per year. There are only 4 commercial fishing boat's permitted to fish for singing scallop's in British Columbia.

This very low harvest percentage rate of the biomass combined with the low number of commercial license's makes this one of the rarest, most sustainable seafoods you can get in BC and possibly anywhere in the world!

Sustainability

  • BC Singing Scallops are highly sustainable and Ocean Wise recomended.

  • This sustainability stems from the low harvest rate of %4 of the biomass per year and low number of participants in the fishery. There are only 4 commercial scallop license's in BC permited to fish. The quota managment system is highly regulated by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to ensure sustainabillity.

  • BC Singing Scallops are two closely related species of scallop called Pink and Spiny scallops. These species of scallops spawn twice per year. making them highly resiliant and extremely abundant in BC's ocean.

  • The 10 Scallop bed area's we are allowed to fish in make up a tiny fraction of the whole coastal area BC singing scallops live in.
